Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1 — Arrival in Leh (3,500m) • Acclimatization

Activities

  • Arrive at Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, Leh.
  • Slow acclimatization walk around Leh bazaar & Shanti Stupa.
  • Briefing and equipment check by expedition leader.

History

Leh was a major centre on the Silk Route linking Kashmir, Tibet, Yarkand, and Central Asia. Traders passed through Leh carrying pashmina, silk, spices, and turquoise.

Activities

  • Visit the three most important monasteries of Central Ladakh.

  • Evening: acclimatization walk & ski gear adjustments.

History

  • Shey Palace: The ancient royal capital of Ladakh until the 15th century; known for its copper-gilded Buddha.

  • Thiksey Monastery: 600-year-old Gelugpa monastery modeled after the Potala Palace.

  • Hemis Monastery: The wealthiest monastery of Ladakh, founded in the 17th century under King Sengge Namgyal.

Activities

  • Early drive to Khardong La (one of the world’s highest motorable passes).

  • Start ski tour from the north side towards the 5,650–5,700m ridge.

  • Summit ridge push (as conditions allow).

  • Enjoy long ski descent on wide snow fields.

  • Return to Leh.

History

Khardong La was part of the ancient trade route from Leh to Kashgar. Caravans with camels and yaks crossed this pass on the Silk Route to Central Asia.

Activities

  • Drive again to Khardong La.

  • Today attempt the traverse from North to South side, crossing a 5,700m shoulder/peak.

  • Ski descent into the valley facing Leh.

History

The region around Khardong formed the gateway to Nubra Valley — known for its strategic importance during Dogra rule and later during the Indian expeditionary era.

Activities

  • Drive to Warila Pass (5,312m).

  • Begin ski touring towards peaks approaching 5,750–5,850m.

  • Long, enjoyable ski descent with panoramic views of the eastern Karakoram and Changthang plateau.

History

Warila was historically used by villagers of Sakti and Tangtse as a summer migration route for livestock. It also connected Leh to Pangong’s ancient pastoral zones.

  • Drive towards the UT Kangri access valley.
  • Short trek to Base Camp (~5,100m).
  • Rest, acclimatize, and prepare gear.

History

UT Kangri (6070m) lies in the Ladakh Range. The region was explored by early European survey teams in the 19th century and later became a favourite for ski-mountaineering due to its wide snow basins.

Activities

  • Alpine start around 3–4 AM.

  • Climb gently rising glaciers toward UT Kangri summit ridge.

  • Push for the 6,070m summit (weather dependent).

  • Epic ski descent back to base.

  • Trek down to roadhead and drive back to Leh.

History

The UT Kangri area was part of historic summer grazing lands used by high-altitude nomads. The mountain gained popularity in the last decade due to excellent skiable slopes.

  • Morning transfer to Leh airport.

  • Fly to Delhi and onwards home.
